GAP-GRADED VERSUS CONTINUOUSLY-GRADED AIR-ENTRAINED CONCRETE FOR HIGHWAY FACILITIES

THE OBJECTIVES IN THE STUDY OF GAP-GRADED (G-G) VERSUS CONTINUOUSLY-GRADED (C-G) AIR ENTRAINED CONCRETE MIXTURES ARE: TO DETERMINE (1) THE OPTIMUM PROPORTIONING OF G-G, (2) THE OPTIMUM AMOUNTS OF SUCH PARAMETERS AS COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATE SIZES AND WEIGHT, WATER CONTENT, CEMENT CONTENT, WATER-CEMENT RATIO, AGGREGATE CEMENT RATIO, FOR BOTH G-G AND C-G, (3) THE RELATIVE EASE OF PLACEMENT AND COMPACTION OF G-G VS C-G, (4) THE SAVING IN CEMENT CONTENT IN G-G TO ACHIEVE THE SAME MODULUS OF ELASTICITY FOR THE SAME MAXIMUM COARSE AGGREGATE SIZE AND WORK- ABILITY, (5) FOR BOTH G-G AND C-G, TWO RELATIONS OF MODULUS OF ELASTICITY AS A LINEAR FUNCTION OF ITS COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH AND UNIT WEIGHT AND ANOTHER TWO RELATIONS OF THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY AS DIMENSIONS FUNCTIONS OF ITS COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH AND THE COARSE AGGREGATE'S MODULUS OF ELASTICITY AND, (6) THE OPTIMUM PERCENTAGES OF TYPE-K SHRINKAGE COMPENSATING CEMENT CONTENT NECESSARY TO COUNTERBALANCE ALL THE DRYING SHRINKAGE OF THE SPECIMENS WITH AND WITHOUT REINFORCEMENT, FOR BOTH G-G AND C-G; TO COMPARE, FOR G-G VS C-G, (1) THE FINISHABILITY IN TERMS OF THE NUMBER OF STRIKE-OFFS AND VIBRATION TIME, (2) THE UNIT WEIGHT, (3) THE ELASTIC MODULI FOR THE SAME MAXIMUM SIZE OF COARSE AGGREGATE, 28-DAY COMPRESIVE STRENGTH AND WORKABILITY AND, (4) THE RELATIVE PERMEABILITY IN TERMS OF INFLOW-TIME CURVES AND COEFFICIENT OF PERMEABILITY; TO INVESTIGATE CREEP AND SHRINKAGE PROPERTIES OF BOTH G-G AND C-G; TO OBTAIN (1) LONGITUDINAL EXPANSION-SHRINKAGE CHARACTERISTICS OF G-G AND C-G WITH AND WITHOUT REINFORCEMENT AND, (2) QUANTITATIVE INFORMATION ON THE RATE AND AMOUNT OF CREEP RECOVERY AND TO OBSERVE CREEP STRAIN BEHAVIOR ON RELOADING; TO CORRELATE SLUMP AND VEBE TIME FOR BOTH C-G AND G-G; TO EVALUATE THE INFLUENCE OF WATER-CEMENT RATIO AND AGGREGATE- CEMENT RATIO ON WORKABILITY OF BOTH C-G AND G-G; TO PROPOSE A MIX DESIGN METHOD FOR G-G BASED ON THE OPTIMAL RESULTS AND TO COMPARE IT WITH ACI METHOD AND SOUTH DAKOTA HIGHWAY CLASS A MIX. /AUTHOR/
