LABORATORY EVALUATION OF FLY ASH AND OTHER POZZOLANS FOR USE IN CONCRETE PRODUCTS

STUDIES OF BINDERS FOR ATMOSPHERIC-PRESSURE STEAM- AND AUTOCLAVE-CURED CONCRETE PRODUCTS HAVE EMPLOYED A VARIETY OF METHODS FOR COMPACTING LABORATORY SPECIMENS, WHICH MAY BE FORMED FROM PASTES, MORTARS, OR CONCRETES. MORTARS MADE WITH STANDARD OTTAWA GRADED SAND ARE SHOWN TO PROVIDE A SATISFACTORY BASIS FOR COMPARING PORTLAND CEMENT POZZOLAN BINDERS FOR USE WITH RELATIVELY NONREACTIVE AGGREGATES, BUT REQUIRE CORRECTION FOR THE DEPRESSING EFFECT ON AIR CONTENT OF SUCH POZZOLANS AS FLY AS HAVING MODERATE TO HIGH CARBON CONTENTS. MORE ACCURATE DATA FOR BINDER FORMULATION ARE PROVIDED BY MORTARS WHICH INCLUDE THE FINER FRACTIONS, PASSING THE NO. 30 OR NO. 50 SIEVE, OF POTENTIALLY REACTIVE AGGREGATES USED IN STEAM-CURED CONCRETE PRODUCTS. THE FINER FRACTIONS INCLUDE THE REACTIVE PORTIONS OF SUCH AGGREGATES AS SAND, BURNED CLAY OR SHALE, SINTERED FLY ASH, SLAG, PUMICE, GRANITE, AND OTHERS. A METHOD OF THIS STUDY EMPLOYS PLASTIC MORTARS WITH CONSISTENCY CONTROLLED BY USE OF THE FLOW TABLE, AND WITH BINDER--FINE AGGREGATE RATIOS EQUIVALENT TO THOSE OF THE CONCRETE PRODUCTS BEING DEVELOPED. TYPICAL STRENGTH DATA FOR ATMOSPHERIC-PRESSURE STEAM-CURED AND AUTOCLAVED MORTARS ARE PRESENTED, SHOWING THE EFFECTS OF VARIATIONS IN CEMENT--POZZOLAN RATIO, CEMENT AND POZZOLAN COMPOSITION, AND AGGREGATE TYPE. /AUTHOR/
