FLOOD ROUTING THROUGH STORM DRAINS-PART II PHYSICAL FACILITIES AND EXPERIMENTS

THIS PART, ENTITLED "PHYSICAL FACILITIES AND EXPERIMENTS", RELATES EXCLUSIVELY TO EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH FACILITIES AND EXPERIMENTS. THE SUBJECTS TREATED ARE: (1) DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE EXPERIMENTAL STORM DRAIN SYSTEM AS A SPECIAL CONDUIT RESEARCH OUTDOOR FACILITY; (2) INSTRUMENTATION AND ITS CALIBRATION; (3) DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA RECORDING SYSTEM; (4) VARIOUS EXPERIMENTAL TEST CONDITIONS AND THEIR TYPICAL RESULTS; AND (5) DISCUSSION OF EXPERIMENTAL ERRORS. A CONDUIT 3 FEET IN DIAMETER AND 822 FEET LONG WAS DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED AT THE ENGINEERING RESEARCH CENTER OF COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY TO MEASURE ACCURATELY GEOMETRIC AND HYDRAULIC CHARACTERISTICS AND THE PROPAGATION OF FLOOD HYDROGRAPHS. THE DATA RECORDING SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED TO ENTER THE OUTPUT EITHER ON CARDS OR PAPER TAPES AND THERBY PROVIDE DIRECT INPUT FOR COMPUTATIONS ON A DIGITAL COMPUTTER. ONLY TYPICAL RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS PAPER; EXPERIMENTAL ERRORS ARE REVIEWED IN A SUMMARIZED FORM. /AUTHOR/
