DESIGN OF STABLE ROADSIDE CHANNELS

THIS MANUAL, CONSISTING MAINLY OF CHARTS AND TABLES, IS BASED ON THE PREMISE THAT, WITH PROPER SEEDING AND MULCHING DURING CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE OF MOST DITCHES ON NORMAL SECTIONS AND GRADES CAN BE HANDLED ECONOMICALLY UNTIL A GROWTH OF GRASS IS ESTABLISHED. EXCEPTIONS ARE DITCHES WITH STEEP GRADES, HIGH FLOW RATES, ABRUPT CHANGES IN ALIGNMENT, CONTINUAL FLOW CONDITIONS, AND UNFAVORABLE SOIL CONDITIONS. PROVISION FOR TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT MEANS OF PROTECTING DITCHES IS CUSTOMARY WHERE ONE OR MORE OF THE ADVERSE CONDITIONS MENTIONED IS ENCOUNTERED. THE FOLLOWING FACTS ARE CONSIDERATIONS, WITH THE ULTIMATE INTENT OF ESTABLISHING VEGETATION WHEREVER POSSIBLE: (1) LOWEST INITIAL COST, (2) LOWEST MAINTENANCE COSTS, (3) AESTHETICS, (4) VEHICLE SAFETY, (5) POLLUTION ABATEMENT, (6) ECOLOGICAL ENHANCEMENT. /AUTHOR/
