SOME HYDRAULIC CHARACTERISTICS OF TRAPEZOIDAL DROP STRUCTURES

THIS THESIS REPORTS PART OF A STUDY CONCERNED WITH SOME OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF FLUID FLOW THROUGH TRAPEZOIDAL DROP STRUCTURES. THE DROP STRUCTURES WERE FORMED BY AN ABRUPT DROP IN THE CHANNEL BOTTOM. THE CHANNELS UPSTREAM AND DOWNSTREAM OF THE DROP STRUCTURE WERE PRISMATIC, TRAPEZOIDAL IN CROSS SECTION AND HAD HORIZONTAL BOTTOMS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF DROP STRUCTURE DESIGN ON THE VELOCITY DISTRIBUTION ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE CHANNEL DOWNSTREAM FROM THE STRUCTURE, AND OTHER PHENOMENA ASSOCIATED WITH FLOW THROUGH A DROP STRUCTURE. RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN TABLES THROUGH DIMENSIONLESS PARAMETERS FOR PARTICULAR DROP STRUCTURE GEOMETRY. THE MORE SIGNIFICANT OF THESE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN GRAPHS AND PHOTOGRAPHS FOR PARTICULAR DISCHARGES AND DROP STRUCTURE GEOMETRY. THE EFFECTS OF DROP STRUCTURE DESIGN ARE CLEARLY SHOWN.
