PREDICTION OF SCOUR AT BRIDGES

THE SCOUR OF RIVER BED MATERIAL AT SEVERAL BRIDGE SITES IN SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO IS INVESTIGATED. ATTEMPTS TO PROVIDE A MORE QUANTITATIVE, LESS INTUITIVE, METHOD OF PREDICTING THE DEPTH OF SCOUR HAVE BEEN CONFINED MAINLY TO TWO METHODS: REGIME THEORY AND DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OR METHOD OF SYNTHESIS. IT WAS FOUND THROUGH ANALYTICAL STUDY AND FIELD OBSERVATIONS THAT SYSTEMATIC RELATIONSHIPS EXIST AMONG THE SIGNIFICANT, RELEVANT DIMENSIONLESS PARAMETERS. THE RELATIONSHIPS, PRESENTED IN GRAPHICAL OR EMPIRICAL FORMULAE, PERMIT PREDICTION OF DEPTH OF SCOUR AT BRIDGES WITH FAIRLY GOOD ACCURACY. /AUTHOR/
