THIN RESINOUS AND AGGREGATE OVERLAYS ON PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE

FIFTEEN DIFFERENT FORMULATIONS OF RESINOUS BINDERS FOR OVERLAYS HAVE BEEN EVALUATED. SEVEN WERE APPLIED NEAR SACRAMENTO WHERE FREEZING RARELY OCCURS AND ELEVEN WERE APPLIED AT KINGVALE NEAR DONNER SUMMIT AT ABOUT 6,000 FEET WHERE SEVERE SNOWPLOW AND CHAIN WEAR IS ENCOUNTERED. ALL BUT ONE OF THE BINDERS TESTED NEAR SACRAMENTO ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AFTER THREE AND ONE-HALF YEARS OF SERVICE. AT KINGVALE ONE POLYESTER SEAL COAT APPLIED IN THREE LAYERS OVER AN EPOXY PRIMER IS SHOWING GOOD DURABILITY BUT LOW SKID RESISTANCE AFTER NEARLY THREE YEARS OF SERVICE. POLYESTER OVERLAYS WITHOUT AN EPOXY PRIMER FAILED DURING THE EARLY PART OF THE FIRST WINTER. SINGLE LAYER EPOXY SEAL COATS, ABOUT 2/8 IN. THICK FAILED IN ONE YEAR OR LESS. TWO DOUBLE LAYER SYSTEMS, EACH ABOUT 1/4 IN. THICK, LASTED FOR TWO YEARS. BLISTERING WAS A PROBLEM ON BOTH INSTALLATIONS. THE BLISTERS USUALLY BROKE AND SPALLED, DECREASING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE OVERLAY AS A WATERPROOF MEMBRANE. THE OVERLAYS APPLIED AS SEAL NEAR SCRAMENTO WERE EFFECTIVE IN PROVIDING NONSKID SURFACE BUT THE TROWELLED OVERLAYS VARIED FROM POOR TO MARGINAL. SKID RESISTANCE OF OVERLAYS IN THE MOUNTAINS REACHED A VALUE NEARLY THAT OF THE ADJOINING CONCRETE WITHIN ONE YEAR WHICH IN SOME CASES WAS BELOW DESIRABLE VALUES. /AUTHOR/
