DOUBLING THE STRENGTH OF CEMENT BY THE ELECTRO HYDRAULIC IMPULSE METHOD

EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED WITH CEMENT-WATER MIXTURES IN AN ELECTRO-IMPULSE PLANT OF STATIONARY TYPE. THE ACTIVATION OF CEMENT BY THE ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC METHOD IS BASED ON THE BREAKDOWN WHICH OCCURS AT A CERTAIN HEIGHT OF CONDENSER CHARGE FROM THE ELECTRIC DISCHARGE OF THE CONDENSER AND OF THE IMPULSE-GENERATING ARC GAP AND THE WORKING ARC GAP OF THE CHAMBER. A PLASMA SPHERE FORMS BETWEEN THE ELECTRODES OF THE WORKING CHAMBER WHICH PRODUCES A COMPRESSION ZONE IN THE TREATED LIQUID. WHEN THE PLASMA SPHERE COLLAPSES, A NEGATIVE PRESSURE WAVE FORMS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE COMPRESSION ZONE. PORTLAND CEMENTS OF VARIOUS COMPOSITIONS WERE TESTED. THE ACTIVATION EFFECT WAS FOUND TO BE DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE NUMBER OF IMPULSES WHICH ARE LIMITED BY THE TEMPERATURE INCREASE OF THE MIXTURE. THE FOLLOWING FACTORS WERE FOUND FOR THE ACTIVATION OF THE CEMENT: (1) RATIONAL FORMING OF WATER LAYERS ON THE GRAIN SURFACE WHICH WORK THEIR WAY INTO THE MICROCRACKS, (2) THE EFFECT OF THE STRONG MAGNETIC AC FIELD PRODUCED BY THE ELECTRIC DISCHARGES ON THE DEGREE OF IONIZATION OF THE HYDROUS SOLUTION, AND (3) ON THE REFORMATION OF THE MIXTURE. THE ELECTRIC CONDUCTIVITY OF THE MIXTURE WAS OBSERVED TO INCREASE AFTER THE TREATMENT. THE INVESTIGATIONS CONFIRM THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ACTIVATION OF CEMENT GROUT BY THE ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC METHOD WATER-CEMENT RATIOS 0.4 TO 0.5. ACTIVATION OF CEMENT BY THE ELECTRO- HYDRAULIC METHOD CAN BE USED TO SAVE CEMENT, TO INCREASE THE QUALITY OF CONCRETE, AND TO SERVE AS A BASE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ECONOMICAL CONCRETES OF HIGH STRENGTH.
