COMPARISON OF STATIC AND DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF PLAIN AND FIBROUS-REINFORCED CONCRETE CYLINDERS

RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF A SERIES OF SIXTEEN STATIC AND SIXTEEN DYNAMIC ULTIMATE UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TESTS PERFORMED ON STANDARD 15 X 30-CM PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE TEST CYLINDERS. THE CYLINDERS CONSISTED OF EITHER PLAIN OR FIBROUS-REINFORCED CONCRETE. FOUR BASIC CONCRETE MIXES WERE USED: PLAIN CONCRETE, STRAIGHT STEEL WIRE FIBROUS-REINFORCED CONCRETE, CRIMPED STEEL WIRE FIBRUOS-REINFORCED CONCRETE, AND NYLON FIBROUS-REINFORCED CONCRETE. RESULTS OF A SERIES OF TWENTY-FOUR COMPLETE LOAD-DEFLECTION TESTS IN UNCONFINED COMPRESSION ARE PRESENTED. MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF THE FIBRES ARE PRESENTED. THE CONCRETE CYLINDERS TESTED HAD A STRESS-STRAIN RELATION IN UNCONFINED COMPRESSION WHICH WAS HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THE LOADING RATE EMPLOYED IN THE TEST. STATIC AND DYNAMIC ULTIMATE UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS OF PLAIN CONCRETE TEST CYLINDERS WERE INCREASED BY THE INCLUSION OF SOME FIBROUS TYPE MATERIALS. COMPLETE LOAD-DEFLECTION TESTS ON FIBROUS-REINFORCED CONCRETE TEST CYLINDERS TESTED IN UNCONFINED COMPRESSION DEMONSTRATED THAT THE FIBROUS TYPE MATERIALS IN THE CONCRETE MATRIX ENABLE THE FIBROUS CONCRETE SYSTEM TO ACCEPT LOAD AFTER THE FRACTURE OF THE CONCRETE MATRIX. /DASK/
