EFFECT OF CONCRETE ADDITIVES ON VARIOUS ASPECTS OF CEMENT HARDENING

A REIVEW IS GIVEN OF THE TECHNOLOGY OF CONCRETE ADDITIVES. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS DEAL WITH DEFINITION, PROPORTIONING, AND CLASSIFICATION OF THESE PRODUCTS, SETTING AND HARDENING MODIFIERS WITH PLASTICIZERS AND FLUIDIZERS, FOAMERS, GAS PRODUCERS, SURFACE HARDENERS, AND CURING PRODUCTS. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE WATER/CEMENT RATIO OR OF THE REVERSE FACTOR IS DISCUSSED. MODIFIERS INCLUDE INHIBITORS, RETARDER, AND ACCELERATORS. CALCIUM CHLORIDE IS STUDIED IN ITS VARIOUS FORMS. ITS SECONDARY EFFECTS ARE ENUMERATED. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GIVEN FOR ITS OPTIMUM PROPORTIONING AND ITS COUNTER-INDICATIONS. ITS CHEMICAL ACTION ON PORTLAND CEMENT IS ILLUSTRATED BY AN EXAMPLE. OTHER ACTIONS OF ADDITIVES ON THE SETTING PROCESS ARE RELATED TO SETTING TIME DEVELOPMENT OF MECHANICAL STRENGTH, VOLUME STABILITY, AND DURABILITY. /AUTHOR/
