TEST METHOD SETTING SET (FRENCH SPECIFICATION) /IN FRENCH/ /IN FRENCH/

SETTING TESTS ARE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE SETTING TIME OF MORTAR OR CEMENT PASTE, E.G. THE TIME BETWEEN THE MOMENT WHEN THE BINDER IS IN CONTACT WITH THE MIXING WATER AND THE BEGINNING OF SETTING. THE LATTER IS DETERMINED BY MEANS OF THE VICAT NEEDLE WHICH PENETRATES INTO A MORTAR OR PURE CEMENT PASTE SAMPLE IN THE SHAPE OF A TRUNCATED CONE. THE BEGINNING OF SETTING IS DEFINED AS THE MOMENT WHEN THE NEEDLE CEASES TO SINK AND STOPS FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE MOULD AT A DISTANCE GREATER THAN 2.5 MM, WHICH IS THE DIMENSION OF THE LARGEST SAND GRAINS. SETTING TESTS ARE NORMALLY CARRIED OUT ON NORMAL MORTAR (NF P 15-403), AND ON NORMAL CEMENT PASTE (NF P 15-402). IT IS CONDUCTED ON AN IMMERSED SAMPLE, OR ON SAMPLES KEPT IN A MOIST CABINET WHERE THE TEMPERATURE OF THE AIR IS KEPT AT 20 DEGREES C PLUS OR MINUS 1 DEGREE C AND THE DEGREE OF HYGROMETRY IS AS NEAR AS POSSIBLE TO SATURATION, E.G. A MINIMUM OF 90 PER CENT. /LCPC/RRL/
