THE LOSS OF PRESTRESS IN PRETENSIONED CONCRETE AS A RESULT OF CURING AT HIGH TEMPERATURES

FORMULAE ARE DERIVED FOR ESTIMATING THE STRESSES INDUCED IN PRETENSIONED CONCRETE DURING HIGH TEMPERATURE CURING FOR VARIOUS CONDITIONS OF BOND BETWEEN THE CONCRETE AND THE STEEL DURING THE INITIAL STAGES OF CURING. TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF CONCRETE UNDER CONDITIONS SIMULATING THE EARLY STAGES OF HIGH TEMPERATURE CURING. AN EXAMPLE IS GIVEN FOR A RANGE OF CONDITIONS IN A TYPICAL CASE. THE MAIN FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ADDITIONAL LOSS OF PRESTRESS ARE SHOWN TO BE THE AMOUNT OF THE RISE IN TEMPERATURE DURING CURING, AND THE COEFFICIENT OF THERMAL EXPANSION OF THE CONCRETE. AN INCREASE IN THE LOSS OF PRESTRESS OF ABOUT 1 PER CENT FOR EACH 10 DEGREE C RISE IN TEMPERATURE MAY BE EXPECTED. /RRL(A)/
