REACTIVITY OF AGGREGATES WITH CEMENT ALKALIS

THE VARIOUS TYPES OF ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTIVITY ARE DESCRIBED AND METHODS FOR IDENTIFYING REACTIVE AGGREGATES ARE DISCUSSED. THE ALKALI REACTIVITY OF NEW ZEALAND AGGREGATES IS CONSIDERED AND EXAMPLES OF REACTIVE COMBINATIONS ARE GIVEN. ALTHOUGH NO INSTANCES OF FAILURE OF CONCRETE OWING TO ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION HAVE BEEN OBSERVED IN NEW ZEALAND, CERTAIN AGGREGATES, PARTICULARLY RHYOLITES, ANDESITES AND DACITE ARE POTENTIALLY REACTIVE. WHERE THESE MATERIALS MUST BE USED, ADEQUATE PRECAUTIONS NEED TO BE TAKEN TO PREVENT A POSSIBLE EXPANSION REACTION FROM OCCURRING, E.G. USE OF LOW-ALKALI CEMENT OR THE ADDITION OF A SUITABLE POZZOLAN. THE NEED FOR CAREFUL INSPECTION OF EXISTING STRUCTURES CONTAINING POTENTIALLY REACTIVE AGGREGATES IS ALSO STRESSED. /TRRL/
