THE EFFECT OF HEIGHT OF HIGHWAY FILLS ON THE DESIGN OF CULVERTS, PHASE 1 - PRESSURE GAGE

PRESSURES ACTING UPON CULVERTS WITHIN OR UNDER HIGHWAY FILLS WERE INVESTIGATED IN THE LABORATORY. A PRESSURE CELL 12 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND ABOUT 1/2 INCH THICK WAS DEVELOPED AND EVALUATED. THE ATTEMPT TO DEVELOP A STRAIN GAGE PROVED UNSUCCESSFUL BUT A SPOOL-TYPE GAGE WAS ADOPTED AND FOUND TO BE PROMISING UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS.
