FLOOD-FREQUENCY FORMULAS FOR MASSACHUSETTS

A PRACTICAL MEANS OF PREDICTING THE PROBABLE MAGNITUDE OF FLOODS ON SMALL DRAINAGE BASINS OF NATURAL, UNREGULATED STREAMS IN MASSACHUSETTS IS PRESENTED. DUE TO A LIMITED AMOUNT OF DATA, THIS METHOD IS NOT APPLICABLE TO SITES WHERE DRAINAGE AREA IS LESS THAN 10 SQUARE MILES. STATISTICAL MULTIPLE-REGRESSION TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO HYDROLOGIC DATA IN AND IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING MASSACHUSETTS IN ORDER TO DEFINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FLOOD PEAKS AND HYDROLOGIC FACTORS. MULTIPLE-REGRESSION EQUATIONS ARE SHOWN THAT RELATE WITH ACCEPTABLE ACCURACY PEAK DISCHARGES OF 1.2 - TO 100-YEAR RECURRENCE INTERVAL, TO 3 HYDROLOGIC VARIABLES , I.E., DRAINAGE AREA, MAIN CHANNEL SLOPE AND OROGRAPHIC FACTOR. /BPR/
