THE FATIGUE OF PLAIN CONCRETE

THE EFFECT OF RANGE OF STRESS, REST PERIODS AND COMPLEX LOAD HISTORIES ON THE PROBLEM OF FATIGUE IS DISCUSSED. THE CONCLUSION IS DRAWN THAT THE FATIGUE LIVES OF CONCRETE SUBJECT TO FIELD LOADING CONDITIONS SEEM SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER THAN CONVENTIONAL FATIGUE TESTS INDICATE. THE PASTE AGGREGATE INTERFACE IS SUGGESTED AS THE CRITICAL POINT FROM WHICH THE CRACKS LEADING TO FATIGUE FAILURE EMANATE. THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE UP TO SEPTEMBER 1965 IS SUMMARIZED, AND AREAS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH SUGGESTED. /RRL/
