TIME SAVING METHODS IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING - CHAPTER 4: ROAD DESIGN

STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT RESPONSES TO NINE QUESTIONS DEALING WITH DESIGN STANDARDS, PREPARATION OF PLANS, AND CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATES ARE PRESENTED IN A TABLE AND IN A QUESTION-BY-QUESTION SUMMARY. OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ARE THE ADVANCES THAT HAVE BEEN MADE IN MODIFYING THE CONTENT AND FORMAT OF CONSTRUCTION PLANS TO ELIMINATE REPETITION AND UNNECESSARY DATA, THE WIDE USE OF STANDARD SHEETS FOR DRAINAGE STRUCTURES, THE TREND TOWARD THE SUBSTITUTION OF TYPING FOR LETTERING AND THE USE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESSES TO MAKE CLOTH REPRODUCTIONS. ALSO OF NOTE WERE THE 'CONTOUR GRADING PLAN' DEVELOPED IN CALIFORNIA, AND THE 'STRIPPING' DEVICE FOR OBTAINING YARDAGE, REPORTED IN MISSISSIPPI. THERE WAS MORE LIMITED USE OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN ROAD DESIGN THAN IN PLANNING AND LOCATION.
