METHODS OF DETECTING THE FORMATION AND PROPAGATION OF MICROCRACKS IN CONCRETE

THREE TESTING TECHNIQUES TO STUDY THE FORMATION AND PROPAGATION OF MICROCRACKS AND THEIR INFLUENCE UPON THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE, ARE USED ON VAROUS MORTAR AND CONCRETE SPECIMENS TESTED TO FAILURE IN UNIAXIAL COMPRESSION. MICROCRACK PROPAGATION IS STUDIED WITH ACOUSTIC, PULSE-VELOCITY AND X-RAY TESTS ON SIMILAR SPECIMENS FROM THE SAME MIX. IN THIS WAY, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CORRELATE THE DATA FROM THE THREE TESTS WITH THE STRENGTH AND ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF THE CONCRETE. THE EFFECT OF VARYING THE PROPORTION OF COARSE AGGREGATE UPON THE FORMATION OF MICROCRACKS IS ALSO CONSIDERED. SAMPLE RESULTS ARE SHOWN AND A FAILURE MECHANISM OF CONCRETE IS SUGGESTED. /A/RRL/
