FAILURE OF PLAIN CONCRETE UNDER FATIGUE LOADING - A REVIEW OF CURRENT KNOWLEDGE

RESEARCH INTO THE BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE UNDER FATIGUE LOADING GOES BACK FOR OVER 70 YEARS BUT MUCH OF IT HAS BEEN FRAGMENTARY AND OF LIMITED SCOPE. A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE INDICATES THAT CERTAIN PARAMETERS ARE LIKELY TO BE IMPORTANT BUT THEIR SIGNIFICANCE CANNOT BE ASSESSED WITH ANY CONFIDENCE UNTIL A GREAT DEAL MORE WORK HAS BEEN DONE TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF SUCH PARAMETERS WHEN VARIED SYSTEMATICALLY OVER A SUFFICIENTLY WIDE RANGE OF VALUES IN A PROPERLY COORDINATED RESEARCH PROGRAM. TIME-DEPENDENT PRARMETERS SUCH AS A SPECIMEN AGE, RATE OF LOADING AND EFFECTS OF REST PERIODS CERTAINLY NEED FURTHER STUDY, WHILE THE EFFECTS OF STRESS INTERACTION AND CUMULATIVE DAMAGE RELATED TO SERVICE LOAD HISTORIES HAVE SCARCELY BEEN TOUCHED ON SO FAR. THIS PAPER REVIEWS THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE ON PLAIN CONCRETE IN THE PAST, DRAWING WHAT BROAD CONCLUSIONS ARE POSSIBLE, AND OUTLINES A COMPREHENSIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM ON UN REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS TO BE UNDERTAKEN BY THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY. /RRL/A/
