WATER POWER REDUCES ACCIDENT SEVERITY

THE WATER-CUSHION CELL, AN ENERGY-ABSORPTION DEVICE THAT USES WATER POWER TO REDUCE THE SEVERITY OF FIXED-OBJECT ACCIDENTS, HAS AS ITS PRINCIPLE ABSORPTION OF CRASH IMPACTS, WHICH ARE TRANSFERRED TO THE WATER BEING FORCED OUT OF THE CELL. THIS REDUCES DECELERATION FORCES TO TOLERABLE LEVELS (8--12 G'S). MAINTENANCE IS VERY SIMPLE, AND THE COST ($1000 FOR SPEEDS BELOW 45 MPH AND $4000 FOR HIGH-SPEED UNITS, EXCLUSIVE OF INSTALLATION) IS COMPETITIVE WITH OTHER SAFETY DEVICES. RESULTS OF FULL-SCALE TESTS AND OF ACTUAL CRASHES IN THE NEW YORK CITY AREA ARE REPORTED TO BE HIGHLY FAVORABLE. THE DESIGN AND FUNCTIONS OF THE CELL ARE DESCRIBED.
