THE INFLUENCE OF THE MIX COMPOSITION ON THE CONSISTENCE OF FRESH CONCRETE AND CEMENT MORTAR

SOME 320 DIFFERENT MIXES WERE STUDIED TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT ON THE CONSISTENCY OF FRESH CONCRETE AND CEMENT MORTAR MIXES OF VARYING MIX PROPORTIONS AND OF VARYING PROPERTIES OF THE MIX CONSTITUENTS. THE CONSISTENCY OF THE MIX WAS MEASURED BY VEBE AND SLUMP TESTS. THE RESULTS SHOWED A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VOLUMETRIC PROPORTION OF AGGREGATE AND THE WATER-CEMENT RATIO, GIVEN CONSTANT CONSISTENCY AND GRADING. ON THE BASIS OF THIS, A MIX DESIGN METHOD APPLICABLE TO BOTH CONCRETE AND CEMENT MORTAR HAS BEEN EVOLVED. THE PROPOSED METHOD ALSO PERMITS THE PROPERTIES OF THE CEMENT AND THE AIR CONTENT OF THE MIX TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. GUIDANCE IS GIVEN REGARDING THE EFFECT OF THE PARTICLE SHAPE OF THE AGGREGATE, ALTHOUGH THIS ASPECT HAS NOT YET BEEN FULLY STUDIED. THE PROPOSED METHOD HAS WIDER APPLICATION AND IS MORE ACCURATE THAN THE DESIGN METHOD. /SVI/RRL/
