A GUIDE FOR ERECTING MAILBOXES ON HIGHWAYS

STANDARDS ARE OUTLINED FOR THE PLACEMENT OF MAIL BOXES TO PROVIDE THE HIGHEST DEGREE OF SAFETY PRACTICABLE FOR THE MOTORING PUBLIC AND THE GREATEST POSSIBLE DEGREE OF PROTECTION TO MAIL CARRIERS AND MAIL BOX OWNERS. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT EACH STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT ADOPT CONTROL REGULATIONS FOR MAIL BOXES AND NEWSPAPER BOXES TO BE PLACED WITHIN THE RIGHT-OF-WAY OF PUBLIC HIGHWAYS. THESE REGULATIONS SHOULD BE COMPATIBLE WITH THOSE OF THE POSTMASTER GENERAL AND SHOULD COVER SUCH ITEMS AS THE PLACEMENT OF THE BOX WITH RESPECT TO THE GEOMETRIC FEATURES OF THE HIGHWAY AND THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUPPORTING MEMBER OR MEMBERS. BOXES SHOULD BE PLACED ONLY ON RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY IN THE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL OF OF THE CARRIER. THEY SHOULD BE PLACED SO THAT IT IS PRACTICABLE AND FEASIBLE THAT WHILE BEING SERVICED, THE SERVICING VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM THE TRAVELED WAY. FOR GENERAL HIGHWAY SAFETY IT IS DESIRABLE THAT ALL MAILBOXES BE MOUNTED ON SUPPORTS THAT WILL YIELD OR COLLAPSE EASILY IF STRUCK BY AN OUT-OF-CONTROL VEHICLE. INDIVIDUAL BOXES SHOULD BE SUPPORTED BY SINGLE SUPPORTS. WHERE BOXES ARE GROUPED AT ONE LOCATION, TWO SUPPORTS OF NO GREATER CROSS SECTIONAL AREA THAN THE SIZE RECOMMENDED FOR SINGLE INSTALLATIONS SHOULD BE USED. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF ACCEPTABLE INSTALLATIONS.
