NEW METHOD OF EVALUATING POZZOLANIC MATERIALS

THE HYDRATION OF POZZOLANS IN POZZOLANIC CEMENT IS GENERALLY STUDIED BY THE ABSORPTION OF THE LIME RELEASED BY CEMENT SILICATES. IT CAN ALSO BE STUDIED BY THE INCREASE IN SPECIFIC SURFACE CAUSED MAINLY BY THE FORMATION OF CALCIUM SILICATE HYDRATES. THE METHOD PROPOSED IS BASED ON THE RELATION BETWEEN THE SPEED OF THESE TWO PHENOMENA. THE DETERMINATION OF THE FREE LIME ABSORBED IS CARRIED OUT EITHER BY USING THE MODIFIED FRANKE METHOD OR BY X-RAY QUANTITATIVE DIFFRACTION. THE SPECIFIC SURFACE IS MEASURED BY THE B.E.T. METHOD. EIGHT SYNTHETIC AND NATURAL POZZOLANS INCLUDING FLY ASH; MIXED WITH CLINKER IN THE PORPORTION 30/70, WERE COMPARED BY MEANS OF CURVES REPRESENTING THE VARIATION IN THE ABSORPTION RATE OF THE LIME AS A FUNCTION OF THE VARIATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPECIFIC SURFACE. THE BEST POZZOLANS ARE THOSE WHICH, FOR A SLOW RATE OF REACTION WITH LIME, GIVE LARGE DEVELOPMENTS OF THE SPECIFIC SURFACE. /LCPC/RRL/
