A STUDY OF VEHICLE REACTION TO PRECAST TRAFFIC CURB

RECENT INSTANCES OF SERIOUS AND SOMETIMES FATAL HEAD-ON ACCIDENTS INVOLVING VEHICLES WHICH HAVE CROSSED THE ROADWAY CENTER MEDIAN INTO APPROACHING TRAFFIC HAVE LED TO CRITICISM OF THE MEDIAN DIVIDERS NOW BEING USED ON SOME HIGHWAYS. IN ORDER TO EVALUATE VEHICLE REACTION ON ONE TYPE OF MEDIAN DIVIDER, A FULL-SCALE TEST WAS PERFORMED. A TEST SECTION OF PRECAST TRAFFIC CURB, TYPE C, WAS PLACED AND A STUDY OF VEHICLE REACTION MADE AS THE CURB WAS STRUCK AT SEVERAL ANGLES AND SPEED BY DIFFERENT AUTOMOBILES. HIGH SPEED MOTION PICTURES WERE TAKEN FROM DIFFERENT POSITIONS TO RECORD VEHICLE REACTION TO THE CURBING, AND THE VEHICLE OPERATOR'S IMPRESSIONS WERE RECORDED AFTER EACH TEST. /AUTHOR/
