FREE LIME IN CEMENT: ITS DETERMINATION (FRENCH)

THE DETERMINATION OF FREE LIME IN COMMERCIAL CEMENT PRESENTS A PROBLEM BECAUSE OF DIFFERENCES IN THE RESULTS GIVEN BY SEVERAL METHODS. A SYSTEMATIC STUDY WAS CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO COMPARE THE THREE MAIN METHODS: CHEMICAL METHODS OF LERCH AND BOGUE, THE I.S.O., AND THE THERMOGRAVIMETRIC METHOD OF ANALYSIS. CEMENT AND MIXTURES WITH LIME ADDITIVES IN DIFFERENT FORMS (ANHYDROUS, HYDRATED, OVERBURNED, LARGE GRAINED, SUPERFICIALLY CARBONATED) WERE STUDIED WITH THE AIM OF FINDING THE CAUSES OF ERRORS IN THE DETERMINATIONS. THE LERCH AND BOGUE METHOD MUST BE REPLACED WITH THE I.S.O. METHOD WHICH WAS RECENTLY RECOMMENDED BY THE INTERNAL ORGANIZATION WHICH BEARS THIS NAME. THE LATTER IS SATISFACTORY FOR ROUTINE TESTS OF CEMENTS OF ALL KINDS, BUT IT IS NOT GOOD WHEN THE FREE LIME CONTENT IS GREATER THAN 2% AND UP TO A CERTAIN POINT WHEN THE CEMENT IS FORMED WITH GRAINS WHICH ARE TOO BIG OR SUPERFICIALLY CARBONATED. THE THERMOGRAVIMETRIC METHOD IS GOOD IN ALL CASES. IN ADDITION, IT IS ACCURATE AND SURE. IT CAN ONLY BE USED, HOWEVER, AS A REFERENCE METHOD BECAUSE OF THE RELATIVELY LONG WORKING TIME./LCPC/A/RRL/
