LONG-TERM CONTROL OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE WIND ON THE ZDAKOV BRIDGE

MOVEMENTS CAUSED BY THE WIND WERE OBSERVED ON CYLINDRICAL COLUMNS. THE EFFECTS OF THE WIND WERE MOST MARKED ON THE HIGHEST COLUMNS WITH AN EXTERNAL DIAMETER OF 1 M. A STUDY WAS MADE OF NATURAL VIBRATIONS FOR A WIND SPEED OF 7 TO 11 M/S. TRANSVERSE VIBRATIONS 13 CM IN AMPLITUDE CREATED INVERTED STRESSES IN THE COLUMNS WHICH CAN LEAD TO FATIGUE. TO REDUCE VIBRATION THE COLUMNS WERE FILLED UP TO 3/4 OF THEIR HEIGHT WITH FINE CHIPPINGS. GOOD RESULTS WERE OBTAINED, THE RESONANCE AND AMPLITUDE OF MOVEMENT WERE REDUCED CONSIDERABLY. THE CHIPPINGS DID NOT INCREASE DAMPING. A TABLE PRESENTS A COMPARISON OF MEASURED AND CALCULATED AMPLITUDES. /LCPC/TRRL/
