AN ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS OF URBAN PAVEMENT AFTER 27 YEARS OF WEATHERIN

THIS REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSIS OF AN URBAN PAVEMENT AT THE FIRST SIGNS OF DETERIORATION AFTER 27 YEARS OF SERVICE. THE PAVEMENT IS HEAVILY TRAFFICKED BY LIGHT AND HEAVY VEHICLES AND NO IMPROVEMENT OR MAINTENANCE WORK WAS EVER CARRIED OUT. SAMPLES OF THE ASPHALT USED FOR THE ROAD CONSTRUCTION WERE PRESERVED, THUS ENABLING THE ORIGINAL BITUMEN SAMPLES TO BE COMPARED WITH THOSE PRESENTLY EXTRACTED FROM THE PAVEMENT, AND THE CHANGES IN THE PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MIXTURE AFTER USE TO BE DETERMINED. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO CORRELATE THE OBSERVED FAILURES WITH TEST RESULTS.
