THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION OF SOME POSSIBLE FROST-RESISTANT PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTIONS IN RELATION TO THEIR THERMAL PROPERTIES

THE CALCULATED DEPTHS AND RATES OF FROST PENETRATION SHOW THAT THE NINE CONSTRUCTIONS CONSIDERED FALL INTO DISTINCT GROUPS AS REGARDS THEIR THERMAL PROPERTIES. THE GROUPS, IN DESCENDING ORDER OF FROST-RESISTANCE COMPRISE CONSTRUCTIONS WITH NON-LOADBEARING INSULATION; CONSTRUCTIONS WITH LOADBEARING INSULATION; CONVENTIONAL CONSTRUCTION; AND FULL-DEPTH ASPHALT CONSTRUCTION. IT IS OF COURSE NOT POSSIBLE TO COMPARE THE CONSTRUCTIONS ON THE BASIS OF THESE RESULTS ALONE; THEIR LOADBEARING PROPERTIES, THE LOADS THEY TRANSMIT, AND THEIR COSTS STILL HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED.
