MAIN SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS OF CARRIAGEWAYS

A STUDY IS MADE OF THE SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS AFFECTING THE ROAD USER AND THE INFLUENCE OF CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES. PROFILOMETERS ENABLE THE DIFFERENCES IN THE LEVEL OF THE ROADWAY TO BE MEASURED AT GOOD AUSCULTATION RATES. SPECTRAL CONCENTRATION TECHNIQUES APPLIED TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE SIGNALS OBTAINED FACILITATE THE CLASSIFICATION OF ROADWAYS AND THE STUDY OF THE EQUIPMENT USED FOR LAYING THE SURFACING. STUDY RESULTS HAVE SHOWN THE DIFFICULTY OF OBTAINING SATISFACTORY EVENNESS OVER GREAT LENGTHS. TRAILER-TYPE APPARATUS OR STRADOGRAPH ENABLE THE LONGITUDINAL TRACTION TO BE MEASURED UP TO A SPEED OF 140 KM/H. THE ANALYSIS OF NUMEROUS MEASUREMENTS MADE ON WET SURFACES HAS SHOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF A GRANULAR TEXTURE AND OF THE USE OF GRAVEL NOT SUBJECT TO POLISHING. THROUGH THE SELECTION OF MIX-DESIGN, THE RIGHT TEXTURE CAN BE OBTAINED, WHILE THE SELECTION OF GRAVEL IN THE LABORATORY ENABLES THE MORE RESISTANT MATERIALS TO BE CHOSEN. AT THE PRESENT TIME ONE OF THE MAIN DIFFICULTIES IS THAT ADHESION DOES NOT LAST LONG BECAUSE OF LARGE-SCALE WEAR OF SEVERE DAMAGE DUE TO THE USE OF STUDDED TIRES. FOR INSTANCE 1 MILLION VEHICLES, HALF OF WHICH ARE EQUIPPED WITH STUDDED TIRES, RESULT IN WEAR OF 25T/KM. ANOTHER ASPECT TO BE KEPT UNDER OBSERVATION IS THE SATISFACTORY GEOMETRY OF THE SURFACES, ESPECIALLY THE TRANSVERSE SLOPE, IN ORDER TO PREVENT AN ABNORMAL ACCUMULATION OF WATER. SEVERAL TOPICS FOR RESEARCH ARE PUT FORWARD WHICH SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED IN A COOPERATIVE EFFORT BY THE AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS AND ROAD ADMINISTRATION EMPLOYEES. /TRRL/
