MICRO-CONCRETE-A NEW ASSET FOR THE CIVIL ENGINEER

THE USE OF MICRO-CONCRETE IS DESCRIBED FOR ANALYZING REINFORCED CONCRETE. THIS STUDY WILL MIX CONCRETE IN AN ELECTRIC EGG BEATER, REINFORCE IT WITH WIRE, AND THEN DESTROY THE FINISHED STRUCTURE WITH VACUUM. REINFORCED CONCRETE IS SUCH A NON-HOMOGENOUS MATERIAL THAT MAY BE CONSIDERED A MIXTURE OF FIVE BASIC MATERIALS: GRAVEL AGGREGATE, SAND PARTICLES, CEMENT, WATER AND STEEL ROD REINFORCEMENT. THE PROBLEMS OF EXPERIMENTING WITH THIS NON- HOMOGENOUS MATERIAL ARE MANY AND VARIED. THE USE OF MICRO- CONCRETE IS PROVING EFFECTIVE AND RELIABLE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF MODELS AND PROTOTYPES. MICRO-CONCRETE IS SIMPLY ORDINARY REINFORCED CONCRETE SCALED DOWN TO A MUCH SMALLER AND MORE CONVENIENT SIZE. INSTEAD OF AGGREGATE, FINE GRAVEL AND COURSE SAND ARE USED. THE SAND IN THE FULL-SCALE MATERIAL IS REPLACED BY VERY FINE SAND AND STEEL ROD REINFORCEMENT BY ORDINARY WIRE. FULL-SCALE REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM TEST RESULTS ARE FOUND TO COMPARE FAVORABLY WITH SIMILAR RESULTS OF TESTS ON MODEL BEAMS WITH A SCALE FACTOR OF FIVE. THE EMPLOYMENT OF MICRO-CONCRETE IN SIMULATING BOTH REGULAR AND PRESTRESSED REINFORCED CONCRETE CONCRETE STRUCTURES IS SEEMINGLY LIMITLESS.
