EVALUATION OF MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES FOR CEMENT, WATER AND AIR CONTENT IN PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE AND THICKNESS OF COVER OVER REINFORCING

THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DEVELOP AND/OR EVALUATE EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES FOR MEASURING FOUR DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS OF PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE. IN THIS RESPECT, IT WAS COMPARABLE TO FOUR DIFFERENT PROJECTS. EACH OF THE PHASES REQUIRED A COMPREHENSIVE SEARCH OF ALL AVAILABLE LITERATURE SO THAT THE PRESENT STATE OF THE ART APPLICABLE TO EACH OF THE PHASES COULD BE INDEPENDENTLY EVALUATED. THE SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOUND IN PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS FOR DETERMINING THE CEMENT, WATER AND AIR CONTENT OF FRESH CONCRETE AND THE COVER OVER REINFORCING OF IN SITU CONCRETE ARE REPORTED FOR EACH PHASE. EACH PHASE IS INITIALLY DEVELOPED INDEPENDENT OF ANY OTHER PHASES OF THE PROJECT AND REQUIRED DIFFERENT APPROACHES, PROTOTYPE EQUIPMENT, EXPERIMENTATION AND EVALUATION. EVENTUALLY A TEST FOR THE THREE CONSTITUENTS, CEMENT, WATER AND AIR IS OUTLINED IN A SINGLE TEST PROCEDURE WITH ESSENTIALLY ONE PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. HOWEVER, THIS COMBINED TEST WAS AN OUTGROWTH OF THE TEST AND EQUIPMENT DEVELOPED FOR MEASURING EACH OF THE CHARACTERISTICS INDIVIDUALLY. FURTHER, THE FINAL TEST FOR THESE THREE COMPONENTS WAS DEVISED TO OVERCOME THE DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED IN PROCURING REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES OF CONCRETE. THIS PROBLEM OF SAMPLING IS COVERED IN A SEPARATE SECTION OF THE REPORT AND REPRESENTS A FIFTH PHASE OF THE PROJECT. /AUTHOR/
