ANALYSIS OF EXPANSION JOINT SPACING IN RIDGED PAVEMENT PAPER NO. 290

THE PAPER EXAMINES THE EFFECT OF MAXIMUM DAILY SURFACE TEMPERATURE, MAXIMUM ANNUAL TEMPERATURE VARIATION, SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS AND SLAB THICKNESS ON THE SPACING OF EXPANSION JOINTS IN CONCRETE ROADS. A METHOD OF CALCULATING THE MAXIMUM SPACING OF EXPANSION JOINTS IS PRESENTED. RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH CURRENT PRACTICE IN OTHER COUNTRIES, AND IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE PRACTICE IN INDIA OF PROVIDING EXPANSION JOINT SPACING AT 18-36 M BE REVISED TO A MAXIMUM SPACING OF 140 M. /TRRL/
