THE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE - A STATISTICAL VIEW

USERS, PRODUCERS, AND SPECIFIERS OF CONCRETE SHOULD BE COGNIZANT OF AND TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE VARIABLE NATURE OF CONCRETE STRENGTH. MUCH CAN BE DONE IN PLANT OPERATION TO REDUCE THE VARIABILITY, BUT IT CANNOT BE ELIMINATED BECAUSE OF THE INHERENT NATURE OF THE MATTER OF WHICH CONCRETE IS COMPOSED. SOME THINGS WHICH MUST BE DONE ARE NOT AT THIS TIME ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE. THE BEST STRENGTH SPECIFICATIONS YET DEVISED REQUIRE A STRENGTH OVERDESIGN TO INSURE THAT 80 OR 90 PERCENT OF THE CONCRETE EXCEEDS THE DESIGN STRENGTH. SUCH A SPECIFICATION PROVIDES PROTECTION FOR THE BUYER AND INCENTIVE TO THE PRODUCER TO REFINE HIS OPERATION. IN PRODUCING CONCRETE TO MEET THIS TYPE OF SPECIFICATION, UNIFORMITY IS NO LESS IMPORTANT, AND SOMETIMES MORE IMPORTANT, THAN ADEQUATE STRENGTH. OCCASIONAL DEPARTURES FROM NORMAL OPERATION - EVEN THOSE WHICH ERR ON THE HIGH STRENGTH SIDE - MIGHT JEOPARDIZE COMPLIANCE WITH THE SPECIFICATION. /AUTHOR/
