STUDY OF CONCRETE RETAINING WALL

A DETAILED REPORT HAS BEEN MADE OF A STUDY OF FACTORS WHICH COULD BE IMPROVED UPON IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE WORKABILITY OF CONCRETE AND, THUS, IMPROVE ITS RESISTANCE TO BENDING AND CRACKING. THE REPORT, COVERING WORK CONDUCTED DURING 1962-1964, CONTAINS AN EXPLANATION OF THE PURPOSE FOR THE STUDY AS WELL AS AN EVALUATION OF ITS FINDINGS. TABLES, GRAPHS, AND ILLUSTRATIONS ARE INCLUDED THAT CLEARLY DEFINE THE PROCESSES INVOLVED. RESEARCH VARIABLES AND STANDARDS FOR NEW CONCRETE AND HARDENED CONCRETE ARE LISTED. A SECTION ON MECHANICAL RESISTANCE AND SHRINKAGE IS ALSO CONTAINED IN THE REPORT. THE INITIAL STAGE OF THE WORK INVOLVES A STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF COMPOSITION AND THE WORKABILITY OF CONCRETE, ITS GRANULOMETRIC COMPOSITION, CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCRETE, THE INFLUENCE OF THE DEGREE OF CLEANLINESS AND THE SHAPE OF COARSE AGGREGATES, AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE TYPE OF FINE AGGREGATES. RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTS ARE DETAILED AND CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN. THE SECOND STAGE OF THE WORK IS CONCERNED WITH THE NATURE AND GRADE OF CEMENT, CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCRETE, RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS ON BOTH NEW AND HARDENED CONCRETE, INFLUENCE OF THE NATURE OF COARSE AGGREGATES, AND ELEMENTS AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF CONCRETE. THE SUMMARY SECTION INCLUDES A DISCUSSION OF THE FORM, NATURE, AND GRADE OF CEMENTS, THE GRANULOMETRIC COMPOSITION OF CONCRETE, ITS WORKABILITY, GRADE, AND ADJUVANTS.
