FREEZING AND THAWING OF CONCRETE-MECHANISMS AND CONTROL

THE BEHAVIOR OF VARIOUS CONCRETE STRUCTURES EXPOSED TO FREEZING AND THAWING ARE DISCUSSED AND THEORIES PRESENTED REGARDING MECHANISMS WHICH CAUSE THIS BEHAVIOR, AND METHODS ARE DESCRIBED OF OVERCOMING THE MECHANISM AND PREVENTING CONCRETE DETERIORATION. THE DURABILITY OF PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE AND ITS ABILITY TO WITHSTAND THE DISRUPTIVE FORCES OF NATURE HAS RESULTED IN ITS REPUTATION FOR PERMANENCE. DETERIORATION AND DISTRESS SOMETIMES RESULTS FROM FREEZING AND THAWING, REACTION BETWEEN CERTAIN REACTIVE AGGREGATES AND ALKALIES, AND SOLUBLE SULPHATES IN WITHER THE SOIL OR WATER. SINCE THE DISCOVERY OF AIR ENTRAINMENT AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE EXPOSED TO FREEZING AND THAWING, EXTENSIVE RESEARCH HAS BEEN CONDUCTED ON THE INFLUENCE OF ENTRAINED AIR IN CONCRETE.
