TRICHLOROSILANATED FATTY MATERIALS AS CONCRETE WATERPROOFING AGENTS

EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE IF FATTY ACIDS SUCH AS TRICHLOROSILANE REACTED WITH TALLOW AND THE RESULTING TRICHLOROSILANATED TALLOW /TCST/ COULD BE USED AS A WATERPROOFING AGENT FOR CONCRETE. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT TCST IMPARTS WATER REPELLANCY BUT NOT WATERPROOFNESS TO CONCRETE. THE COATING IS REASONABLY RESISTANT TO THE ELEMENTS AND APPARENTLY RESISTANT TO SOIL MICROORGANISMS. IT WOULD SEEM TO BE SUITED TO ABOVEGRADE OR AT-GRADE APPLICATIONS BUT NOT TO THE WATERPROOFING OF DAMP BASEMENT WALLS. THE FUTURE FOR TRICHLOROSILANATED FATTY MATERIALS AS WATER REPELLANCY AGENTS FOR CONCRETE LOOKS GOOD BUT MORE RESEARCH IS NEEDED.
