REAL-TIME HIGHWAY DISPLAY AND INTERACTION

DURING THE DESIGN OF A PROPOSED HIGHWAY, AN IMMENSE AMOUNT OF DATA IS COLLECTED, DESCRIBING THE PROPOSED ALIGNMENT VERY PRECISELY. THE REDUCTION OF THIS DATA TO A FORM WHERE THE HIGHWAY CAN BE VISUALIZED HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE TO THE HIGHWAY ENGINEER. THE COMING OF COMPUTERS AND ESPECIALLY COMPUTER GRAPHICS HAS INSPIRED A NUMBER OF IMPROVEMENTS IN THE AREA OF VISUALIZATION. A SYSTEM NOW EXISTS THAT SHOWS A REAL-TIME DRIVE DOWN THE HIGHWAY ON A CRT AND PROVIDES FOR ON-LINE MODIFICATION OF THE HIGHWAY ALIGNMENT. /AUTHOR/
