COMPARATIVE STUDY ON BEHAVIOR OF PRESTRESSED AND REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS SUBJECT TO LOADING REVERSALS

THE WORK REPORTED HERE IS AIMED AT DESIGNING CONCRETE MEMBERS TO MAINTAIN DUCTILITY AND ENERGY-ABSORBING CAPACITY, PARTICULARLY FOR EARTHQUAKE RESISTANCE. EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED WITH 12 BEAMS DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS: BEAMS WITH THE SAME ULTIMATE FAILURE STRENGTH, AND THOSE WITH THE SAME WORKING STRENGTH. THE SUPERIORITY OF THE PRESTRESSED BEAMS IN SEVERAL STRENGTH CATEGORIES IS DESCRIBED, AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR DESIGN ARE DISCUSSED.
