CALCULATION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE UP TO FAILURE. THEORY AND NUMERICAL APPLICATIONS

A THEORY IS PRESENTED TO DETERMINE THE ELEMENTS OF REINFORCED CONCRETE WITH ACCURACY FOR GREATER SAFETY. THIS COMPOSITE MATERIAL IS EXTREMELY ADAPTABLE AS A RESULT OF THE CONSIDERABLE PLASTIC ELONGATION POSSIBILITIES OF STEEL AND THE PROGRESSIVE DEFORMATION OF THE CONCRETE UNDER COMPRESSION. THIS ADAPTATION, HOWEVER, HAS EXTREMELY VARIABLE EFFECTS ACCORDING TO THE NATURE OF THE PROJECT, AND THE RESULTING SAFETY LEADS TO VERY DIFFERENT RESULTS IN THE CLASSIC THEORY BASED EXCLUSIVELY ON THE ELASTIC EQUILIBRIUM. IF THE LATTER AFTER THE FIRST ADAPTATION, IS TO BE CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING THE LOADS OF THE PROGRAM, IT MUST ALSO BE SUPPLEMENTED BY CONSIDERABLE PLASTIC STRENGTH BEFORE FAILURE, IN ORDER TO AVOID ACCIDENTS ARISING FROM POSSIBLE EVENTS UNFORSEEN IN THE PROGRAM. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO ACCIDENTAL EXCESSIVE LOADS, VARIATIONS IN THE STRENGTHS OF THE FOUNDATION. IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE BEST STRUCTURES AND TO KNOW THE REAL VALUE OF SAFETY, THE REAL PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS WHICH DETERMINE THEIR BEHAVIOR HAVE TO BE DEFINED. THE CONCEPT OF BRITTLENESS IS INTRODUCED AND THE PHYSICAL ANALYSIS INDICATED TO THE DESIGNER THE CRITERIA CHARACTERISTICS OF THE USEFULNESS OF THE MATERIALS EMPLOYED. THE STUDIES THUS ALL PROJECTS. THE METHOD REMAINS ACCURATE RIGHT UP TO THE EXTREME LIMITS OF USE OF STRONGLY REINFORCED MEMBERS. IT IS THEREFORE POSSIBLE TO INCREASE SAFETY WITHOUT RAISING COSTS BY MAKING THE DESIGN OF ALL PROJECTS MORE UNIFORM.
