INTERIM REPORT-PHASE I: BEHAVIOR OF SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATING CONCRETES SUITABLE FOR USE IN BRIDGE DECKS

THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS REPORT ON PHASE 1 OF PROJECT IHR-405, "USE OF SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATING CONCRETE IN BRIDGE DECKS," IS TO PROVIDE USEFUL BACKGROUND ON SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATING CEMENT CONCRETE MIX DESIGN VARIABLES. A STANDARD BRIDGE MIX DESIGN WAS USED IN THE LABORATORY TO STUDY THE BEHAVIOR OF SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATING CEMENT CONCRETES. A FURTHER OBJECTIVE IS TO RELATE THE FINDINGS OF RESEARCH CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE METHODS WHICH WILL ENABLE THE ENGINEER TO PRODUCE A MIX WHICH WILL GIVE OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE IN THE FIELD. A REPORT FOR PHASE 2 OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT WILL CONTAIN A DETAILED DISCUSSION OF THE BEHAVIOR OF SHRINKAGE-COMPESATING CEMENT CONCRETES IN TYPICAL FULL DEPTH BRIDGE DECK SECTIONS. THIS REPORT CONTAINS THE FINDINGS OF RESEARCH ON THE EFFECT OF ADMIXTURES, CURING PROCEDURES, AND MAGNITUDE OF RESTRAINT ON THE EXPANSION AND SHRINKAGE OF SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATING CEMENT CONCRETES. SLUMP LOSS AND STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS, THE EFFECTS OF MIXING TIME AND STORAGE CONDITIONS ON EXPANSION, AND THE RESISTANCE TO SCALING DUE TO FREEZING AND THAWING CYCLES ARE ALSO PRESENTED. THE MIX PROPORTIONS USED IN THIS REPORT ARE PRESENTED IN THE APPENDIX. SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION OF PROJECT IHR-405 SHOULD LEAD TO: (1) RECOMMENDED PROCEDURES FOR HANDLING AND STORAGE OF SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATING CEMENT CONCRETES, (2) RECOMMENDED PROPORTIONING PRACTICES TO INSURE OPTIMUM BEHAVIOR OF SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATING CEMENT CONCRETES, AND (3) EVALUATION OF THE RESISTANCE OF SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATING CEMENT CONCRETES TO SCALING AND SPALLING IN BRIDGE DECKS. HOWEVER, COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT DEPENDS UPON FAVORABLE RESULTS OF EACH SUCCESSIVE PHASE. /NTIS/
