SLIPPING AT CONTACT SURFACES OF PLAIN RUBBER PADS IN COMPRESSION

A LARGE NUMBER OF PLAIN, UNBONDED RUBBER PADS ARE USED IN COMPRESSION, ONE NOTABLE EXAMPLE BEING EXPANSION PADS FOR BRIDGE DECKS. IT IS POSSIBLE, UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, FOR SLIP TO OCCUR WITHIN THE CONTACT SURFACES. THIS LEADS TO AN INCREASE IN DEFLECTION UNDER LOAD, SPREADING OF THE PAD, AND CONCERN BY THE ENGINEER IN CHARGE FOR THE SAFETY OF THE SUPPORTED STRUCTURE. IF PADS ARE TO BE LOCATED IN POSITIONS WHERE REPLACEMENT WOULD BE COSTLE, THEN THE ENGINEER MUST ENSURE THAT THE CONDITIONS FOR SLIP ARE AVOIDED. A SIMPLE MECHANISM IS DESCRIBED WHICH IS USED TO DETERMINE THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH SLIP AT THE CONTACT SURFACES CAN OCCUR. THESE ARE THEN COMPARED WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA. /AUTHOR/
