A QUICK-SETTING SILICO-PHOSPHATE CEMENT

THE PURPOSE WAS TO DEVELOP A VERY RAPID-PATCHING CEMENT FOR REPAIR OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS AND BRIDGE DECKS. QUICK-SETTING CEMENTS WERE DEVELOPED WITH SOME PROPERTIES SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER THAN THOSE OF TYPE III PORTLAND CEMENT. THESE SILICOPHOSPHATE CEMENTS WERE PREPARED FROM A NATURALLY OCCURRING CALCIUM SILICATE, WOLLASTONITE, AND PHOSPHORIC ACID CONTAINING DISSOLVED METAL IONS, SUCH AS ZINC, ALUMINUM, ETC. THE CEMENT-TO-AGGREGATE RATIO, THE LIQUID-TO-POWDER RATIO, AND THE TYPES AND QUANTITIES OF USEFUL ADDITIVES TO THE ACID WERE INVESTIGATED. SETTING TIMES FOR HARDENING RANGED FROM MINUTES TO HOURS AND WERE CONTROLLABLE DEPENDING ON FORMULATION AND PROCESSING. COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS DEVELOPED IN HOURS USING QUICK-SETTING CEMENTS EXCEEDED THOSE OBTAINED AFTER DAYS OF CURING WITH CONVENTIONAL CEMENTS. THE REPRODUCIBILITY IN FABRICATING MECHANICALLY MIXED CEMENT SAMPLES IN THE LABORATORY WAS DETERMINED. THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS CURING CONDITIONS ON STRENGTH PROPERTIES WERE NOTED. LINEAR EXPANSION AND RESISTANCE TO FREEZE-THAW CYCLING AND TO VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTS WERE MEASURED. TENSILE AND BOND STRENGTHS WERE ALSO INVESTIGATED. /AUTHOR/
