PERFORMANCE OF EPOXY TEST SECTIONS ON DECK OF BIG BLUE RIVER BRIDGE

THIS IS A FINAL REPORT ON ONE PHASE OF A CONTINUING STUDY OF CONCRETE BRIDGE DECK DETERIORATION. THIS PHASE WAS INITIATED TO INCREASE THE SKID RESISTANCE OF THE LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE DECK AND REDUCE THE EXCESSIVE WEAR CAUSED BY ABRASIVE ACTION OF DE-ICING SALT AND SAND. A SIDE BENEFIT WOULD BE THE ADDED PROTECTION OF THE DECK FROM SALT SCALING AND GENERAL DETERIORATION. THE TEST SECTION INCLUDED SEVERAL DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS OF EPOXY TYPE MATERIALS. NO DETERMINATION WAS MADE ON SKID RESISTANCE OF EACH SECTION. IT WAS ASSUMED THAT ALL SECTIONS HAD IMPROVED SKID CHARACTERISTICS. THE SURVEY WAS BASED ON DURABILITY AND RESISTANCE TO WEAR. THE AMOUNT OF WEAR WAS MEASURED BY PERIODIC VISUAL EXAMINATION. A DISCUSSION OF THE OBSERVATIONS AND PHOTOS OF EACH SECTION TESTED ARE INCLUDED. /FHWA/
