SQUARE OPENINGS IN WEBS OF CONTINUOUS JOISTS

THE FIRST PHASE OF A COMPREHENSIVE INVESTIGATION IS REPORTED. TESTS SHOW THE EFFECT OF STRENGTH AND BEHAVIOR OF SQUARE WEB OPENINGS IN CONTINUOUS LIGHTWEIGHT-AGGREGATE CONCRETE JOIST FLOORS. PRINCIPAL VARIABLES WERE SIZE, LOCATION, AND REINFORCEMENT OF THE OPENING. DATA WERE OBTAINED SHOWING THE DISTRIBUTION OF FORCES ABOVE AND BELOW THE OPENING. TENTATIVE DESIGN PROCEDURES ARE DISCUSSED. FURTHER WORK IS IN PROGRESS REGARDING OTHER SHAPES OF OPENINGS AND MULTIPLE OPENINGS. /AUTHOR/
