SUGGESTED CRITERIA FOR HEAT CURVING, ROLLED BEAMS AND WELDED GIRDERS

SUGGESTED CRITERIA ARE PRESENTED FOR THE CURVING OF ROLLED BEAMS AND WELDED PLATE GIRDERS TO OBTAIN A HORIZONTAL CURVATURE. THE CRITERIA ARE BASED ON GIRDERS SYMMETRICAL ABOUT THE VERTICAL CENTERLINE OF THE WEB, BUT SYMMETRY ABOUT THE HORIZONTAL AXIS IS NOT REQUIRED. THESE GIRDERS MAY BE FABRICATED FROM ANY OF THE STRUCTURAL STEELS COVERED BY THE AASHO SPECIFICATIONS EXCEPT ASTM A514 AND A517 STEELS. THE APPLICATION OF THE MINIMUM-RADIUS CRITERIA TO TYPICAL BRIDGE GIRDERS RECENTLY HEAT-CURVED IS PRESENTED IN A TABLE. FOR EACH GIRDER, THE SUGGESTED MINIMUM RADIUS WAS GOVERNED BY A PRESENTED EQUATION, WHICH IS BASED ON WEB BOWING AND THE BOWING WAS OBSERVED IN BOTH GIRDERS. SINCE BOTH OF THESE GIRDERS WAS HEAT-CURVED TO A RADIUS CLOSE TO THE SUGGESTED MINIMUM AND ONLY RELATIVELY MINOR WEB-BOWING PROBLEMS WERE INCURRED, IT APPEARS THAT THE SUGGESTED CRITERIA FOR MINIMUM RADIUS ARE REASONABLE.
