STUDY OF BENDING OF HIGH STRENGTH REINFORCING BARS. LITERATURE REVIEW AND SURVEY OF PROBLEM

RESULTS OF A REVIEW OF BENDING REQUIREMENTS FOR CONCRETE REINFORCING STEEL ARE PRESENTED AS WELL AS A SURVEY OF CORPS OF ENGINEERS PROJECTS TO DETERMINE THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF BENDING FAILURES DURING FIELD FABRICATION OF HIGH STRENGTH REINFORCING BARS. ALTHOUGH USE OF HIGH STRENGTH REINFORCING STEEL IS INCREASING RAPIDLY VERY FEW BENDING STUDIES OF STEEL BARS HAVE BEEN MADE, AND STANDARD BENDING DETAILS ARE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME AS FOR MILDER GRADES OF STEEL. THE FIELD BENDING EXPERIENCE AT CORPS OF ENGINEERS PROJECTS HAS BEEN SATISFACTORY, AND A FEW FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED WHEN STANDARD BENDING PRACTICES HAVE BEEN FOLLOWED. FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED WHEN BENDING RADII WERE LESS THAN STANDARD AND WHEN STRAIGHTENING AND REBENDING OF BARS WAS REQUIRED. THE GENERAL INDICATION IS THAT CURRENT STANDARD DETAILING PRACTICES PROVIDE SATISFACTORY LIMITS FOR BENDING OF ALL GRADES OF REINFORCING STEEL. /AUTHOR/
