ULTIMATE TORQUE CARRYING CAPACITY OF PLAIN CONCRETE RECTANGULAR BEAMS

A PREDICTION EQUATION BASED ON TORSION TESTS ON THIRTY-SIX BEAMS FOR ESTIMATING THE CONTRIBUTION OF PLAIN CONCRETE IN CARRYING THE ULTIMATE TORQUE IS PRESENTED. SPLIT CYLINDER STRENGTH IS USED TO DETERMINE THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE. ALTHOUGH TORSION INVOLVES A BIAXIAL STATE OF STRESS, THE COMPUTED VALUES OF THE ULTIMATE TORQUE COMPARE WELL WITH THE OBSERVED VALUES; THE HETEROGENEOUS NATURE OF CONCRETE AND THE INTERDEPENDENCE OF MANY FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE ITS FUNDAMENTAL PROPERTIES JUSTIFY THE USE OF THE PROPOSED APPROACH FOR ASSESSING THE ULTIMATE TORSIONAL STRENGTH OF PLAIN CONCRETE BEAMS. /RRL/
