STEEL BRIDGE PARAPETS DYNAMICALLY TESTED

PRELIMINARY TEST RESULTS ISSUED BY THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY SHOW THAT FOR STEEL, THE PRESENT BE5 (MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM) REQUIREMENTS PRODUCE AN ACCEPTABLE PERFORMANCE FOR CARS UNDER STANDARD TEST CONDITIONS. IT IS INDICATED THAT, EVEN FOR MATERIAL WITH A HIGH MODULUS OF ELASTICITY, INCREASED STIFFNESS OF THE GROUP P, PARAPET IS NECESSARY TO REDUCE VEHICLE ROLL. THE COACH TEST SHOWED THE STRENGTH OF THE STEEL PARAPET UNDER IMPACT LOADING, AND THE NEED FOR GREATER PARAPET HEIGHT AND INCREASED STIFFNESS, IF HEAVY VEHICLES ARE TO BE RE-DIRECTED WITHOUT ROLL. /RRL/
