THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL STUDIES ON ULTIMATE SHEAR STRENGTH OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS WITHOUT WEB REINFORCEMENT AND TESTED UNDER EITHER TWO-POINT OR UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED LOADING. FACTORS GOVERNING THE TWO PRINCIPAL CATEGORIES OF SHEAR FAILURE, NAMELY SHEAR-COMPRESSION TYPE AND WEB-CRUSHING TYPE, HAVE BEEN EXAMINED. FOR SHEAR-COMPRESSION FAILURE LOAD, A SEMI-EMPIRICAL CHARACTERISTIC EQUATION HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FROM THE ANALYSIS OF TEST RESULTS ON THE BASIS OF A MODIFIED LINEAR STRAIN DIAGRAM. /AUTHOR/
