A STATISTICAL THEORY OF THE BRITTLE FRACTURE OF STEEL

A STATISTICAL MODEL IS DERIVED FOR ANALYZING THE BRITTLE FRACTURE OF STEEL. THE FRACTURE IS ASSUMED TO BE CAUSED BY THE COMBINATION OF A LARGE NUMBER OF CRACKS ORIGINATING AT VARIOUS POINTS. EXPERIMENTAL DATA ARE ALSO PRESENTED AND SUGGESTIONS PUT FORWARD FOR DRAWING UP AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM. /LCPC/A/RRL/
